Your numbers
Your results
- Full retirement number (FIRE)
- $1,500,000
- Coast FIRE number today (age 34, retiring at 65)
- $246,382
- Current savings grown for 31 years with no new contributions
- $730,572
At $1,200/month you reach Coast FIRE in about 13 years — around age 47. After that you could stop contributing and still retire at 65 on $60,000 a year.
How the Coast FIRE math works
Start with the retirement number: annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate (a 4% rate is the same as 25× annual spending). Then discount that number back to today using your expected real return:
Coast FIRE number = retirement target ÷ (1 + real return)years until retirement
If your invested balance is already above that figure, compounding alone finishes the job. Everything you earn from that point covers today's life instead of tomorrow's.
Why Coast FIRE matters for families
Households with children rarely want an early exit from work — they want breathing room. Hitting Coast FIRE lets a family redirect retirement contributions toward childcare, a shorter work week, a career change, or a parent taking time off, without putting retirement at risk.
Assumptions worth stress-testing
- Use a real (inflation-adjusted) return, typically 5–7%, so all figures stay in today's dollars.
- Only count invested assets — cash buffers and home equity do not compound the same way.
- Run a conservative case (lower return, higher spending) before you actually stop contributing.
- Recheck yearly: spending, income, and markets all move.
Coast FIRE questions families ask
What is Coast FIRE?
The point where existing savings will grow to your retirement goal without further contributions. You still work to fund current expenses.
Is Coast FIRE the same as FIRE?
No. Full FIRE means your portfolio covers living expenses today. Coast FIRE only means retirement is already on autopilot.
What return should I assume?
Most planners use 5–7% real for a stock-heavy portfolio. Lower assumptions produce a larger, safer Coast FIRE number.
